Language stripped back to its most immediate form
Working with black Japanese calligraphy ink on white paper, Eley strips words back to their most immediate form. Each work begins with a few words or a short phrase, something remembered, overheard or drawn from an internal dialogue.
Painted directly by hand, the brushstrokes retain their variations and imperfections, giving the words intimacy, immediacy and a visible human presence. Meaning is deliberately left open. A phrase that begins with one experience can become something entirely different in the hands of the viewer.
