LOVE LETTERS

“Words wield immense power. They possess the extraordinary ability to inspire, comfort, provoke, divide and unite. They shape our thoughts, beliefs and destinies with their impact.

Rooted in simplicity, my monochromatic ink on paper paintings strip words down to their most basic visual form. They occupy the space between what is said and what is felt. Each painting is a fragment of a connection – a declaration, a regret, a plea, a fleeting moment. The rudimentary execution contrasts with the opaqueness of the words, allowing the viewer to lean in, respond and reflect in a way that’s personal to them. They demand to be read, but also to be felt, as open invitations to connect, remember, laugh or cry. These are not just marks on paper, but fragments of our past experiences.

These simple brushstrokes can help lift or unravel us.” — Matt Eley
